Calling All Speakers – We Want to Hear From You!

The PMI New York City Chapter is searching for volunteer speakers for upcoming chapter meetings. Our chapter members are a diverse group representing many professional communities including Construction, Financial Services, Healthcare, Government, Higher Education, Technology and Not-for-Profit organizations.

To serve this diverse group, our focus for the 2022 speaker lineup is to provide our members with exposure to topics related to Climate Change, Sustainability, Emerging Technologies, Governance, Diversity & Inclusion, as well as topics directly related to the PMI Talent Triangle.

Volunteering to present at a chapter meeting is an opportunity for you to grow your network and gain exposure in the PMI world. If you are a PMI member, it is an opportunity to give back to the community, by sharing your knowledge and learnings with other members.

If you want to present at an upcoming chapter meeting or know someone who would be a good fit, please send an email with the below information to cmteam@pminyc.org

  • A short bio telling us who you are, including any applicable details such as: professional background, credentials/certifications, prior speaking engagements and/or publications
  • A photograph of you (to be used on meeting registration link on the website)

  • ACP Presentation - Agile versus Traditional Project Management (9/2) - In today’s world of fast paced technology and continually changing requirements, the need for Agile Project Management has greatly increased.

What is Agile Project Management and when does it make sense to use it? What are benefits of using Agile methods and when is it not a good fit? How does Agile relate to traditional project management? Are there similarities, or do I need to relearn everything I know about project management to lead Agile projects? This presentation provides an overview of a number of Agile methodologies and details their benefits, weaknesses, and when they're commonly used.

Mentoring

Mentoring Program

Mentoring_AdobeStock_52600846.jpg

The PMINYC Mentoring Program provides mentoring opportunities for all members of our chapter. Mentoring is a mutual sharing of experiences and opinions to create agreed-upon outcomes. This program aims to develop and strengthen project management competencies in line with the PMINYC Chapter goals of servicing member value and professional development. It is a great learning opportunity for both Mentors and Mentees.

The value partners gain in mentoring depends largely on the goals of the mentoring pair and their professional relationship. Participants may find that their involvement in the program helps to solve complex problems within their work environment, advance career paths, or to grow business. We hope that this program helps to develop habits that will be critical success factors for developing new career opportunities and long-term professional growth.

The PMINYC Mentoring Program is based on a one-on-one format. Participants in the program are encouraged to spend time sharing challenges, ideas, and perspectives on specific areas of project management for the benefit of their own professional development objectives. Mentors and Mentees are paired based on areas of industry, interest, skills, and other similarities. Participation in the Mentoring Program is a rewarding experience which will further establish your place in our professional and social networking community.

This voluntary program is governed by formal guidelines and goals designed to provide a framework for the Mentor-Mentee relationship. These guidelines also determine the completion of the pairing objectives. Please remember that your pairing is a volunteer effort and not a paid educational opportunity. Both partners must fully participate for the pairing to be successful.

Testimonial

'The mentoring program has meant so much to me. This program has matched me with someone who was aspiring to be a Project Manager and who has been through the grind. I realized I had not just a mentor but someone there to guide me.' - Zachary Handler, Mentoring Program participant.

If you also would like to share your knowledge and help a mentee with his/her career like Zachary did, please join us at the Mentoring Program! Email us for details: mentoring@pminyc.org Community | Education | Enrichment

What does a Mentor do?

Mentors are facilitators and catalysts in a process of discovery and insight. Previous experience should be used as a guideline rather than a master plan. In a learning partnership, the Mentor’s role is to “guide on the side” rather than to be “the expert with the answers.” Share information that is valuable to your listener.

What does a Mentee do?

Mentees bear responsibility for setting priorities, finding resources, learning, and to become increasingly self-directed throughout the mentoring relationship. The Mentee focuses his or her participation on completing milestones of professional development or working towards career goals. Think about what drives your quest for knowledge. Have a set of goals to accomplish before being paired with a Mentor.

Requirements

All participants must be members of PMINYC and in good standing. Mentors must be PMP-certified and have worked as a PMP for a minimum of 5 years. Mentors have volunteer status within PMINYC and are therefore required to complete the Confidentiality Agreement and Conflict of Interest forms prior to participation.

PMP certification is not required for Mentees. Participant pairs must commit to meet a minimum of once every four weeks for a minimum of six months. Mentors and Mentees must mutually agree on a schedule. Meeting more frequently is encouraged, but not required. Please contact Mentoring@PMINYC.org if your situation changes so that you are no longer able to meet the minimum requirements.

PDUs

Mentors earn up to 49 PDUs per three-year cycle as a PMINYC Mentor.

  • Mentors can collect 1 PDU per hour volunteered. This includes all meetings and time spent communicating, planning, and working directly with teams and at events. Maximum PDUs awarded as noted under Category “Giving Back” per CCRS Handbook. Maximum: 25 PDUs in 3-year cycle (PMP/PgMP).
  • Also, Mentoring Program Managers can collect 1 PDU per hour participating in PMINYC’s exclusive Mentoring Workshops. Each workshop provides 2 PDUs and there are four workshops per year, totaling up to 24 PDU’s per 3-year cycle. Maximum PDUs awarded as noted under Category “Leadership” per CCRS Handbook. Maximum: 24 PDUs in 3-year cycle (PMP/PgMP).

Outreach

Outreach Programs

The objective of the PMINYC Outreach Programs is to build bridges through community initiatives.  We believe that there are many opportunities to share knowledge, experiences and expertise with one another to foster leadership skills and professional growth.  Unimaginable synergistic power and opportunities are possible through our outreach programs: academic, corporate and community service.

  • The Academic Outreach team connects with local colleges, universities, and other educational institutions to form sustainable partnerships to spread the knowledge of the project management discipline.
  • The Corporate Outreach's mission is to advance the practice and profession of project management among businesses throughout the NYC area. Their objective is to help these businesses embrace, value, and practice project management within their organizations.
  • The Community Service Outreach team focuses on organizing events for members to give back to the local community and partners with NGOs and NPOs to share knowledge about the project management discipline and discuss how they can apply it in practice to add value within their organization.

Success Stories

The PMINYC study group has been a great experience for our members. Here are some comments from past cycle participants:

'I passed! In no small part thanks to our facilitator and the rest of my study group.'

'The study group really helped me stay motivated. I knew I had to prepare for our meeting each week if only so I didn't let the group down; plus it was fun to meet new people and share project management war stories. Instead of feeling all alone, I was part of a community with a common goal - pass the darn test (plus it was fun!)'

'Assigning each member a PM was an excellent decision and should continue to be a requirement.'

'Content in Dropbox exceeded all expectations. Clearly, a lot of thought and hard work went into assembling materials. It made studying much easier and organized to have that resource.'

'Everyone had something to offer concerning study materials.'

'The PMP materials were an essential part of the studying process. It was also helpful to have other resources and a variety of study apps as well.'

'Excellent group of people. Everyone with different work experience and different experience with PMP and taking the PMP. All willing to help each other.'

'Reviewing key points/confusing topics and going over confusing/wrong test questions.'

'Working with other professionals to understand PMP gaps.'
